Mehbooba Mufti (Social Media)
National News: At the 26th Foundation Day celebrations of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Srinagar, party president and former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti delivered a strong message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She urged him to view the Kashmir issue not merely through the “lens of security,” but through a political and human approach that could pave the way for lasting peace.
In her address, Mehbooba Mufti said, “Prime Minister Modi has a powerful mandate. He has made bold moves in foreign policy and taken steps to improve relations with neighboring countries. If he shows the same courage on Kashmir, it could open the door to a permanent solution and real peace.”
She added, “Today, both India and the world see Prime Minister Modi as a leader capable of taking tough decisions. The resolution of the Kashmir issue is possible—but only under his leadership.”
Mufti emphasized that the central government must stop viewing Kashmir solely as a security issue. She pointed out, “For years, policies in Kashmir were framed with the belief that more troops meant more security. But this approach has been in place for decades and the problems remain unresolved. Soldiers alone cannot heal wounds—trust must be rebuilt among the people.”
Speaking on the abrogation of Article 370, Mehbooba Mufti questioned whether it brought the intended peace. “The government assumed that revoking Article 370 would fix everything, but reality says otherwise. Peace is still distant. People here need to feel that they are not outsiders or enemies but equal citizens of India.”
Mehbooba urged the Centre to restart dialogue and rebuild democratic institutions in the region. The people of Kashmir seek dignity and justice. They need to be heard, and their grievances must be understood. Panchayats, assemblies, and local bodies must be revived so people feel they are true participants in democracy.
Highlighting her party’s consistent approach, Mufti said, “Whether in power or in opposition, PDP has always stood for dialogue. Our vision is a Jammu & Kashmir where fear has no place, where jobs and education are accessible, and where progress goes hand‑in‑hand with respect. If the center initiates trust‑building measures, that dream can become a reality.”
Concluding her speech, Mehbooba delivered a pointed message to the Prime Minister: “You hold the mandate of 1.4 billion Indians. Your decisions shape the nation’s course. If you step forward and lead the way on Kashmir, you won’t just bring lasting peace—you’ll be remembered in history as the leader who gave Kashmir a new direction.”
Mehbooba Mufti’s remarks carried a clear call: solving Kashmir requires breaking away from outdated mindsets. The focus must shift from force to dialogue, from distrust to trust, and from repression to democratic inclusion. According to her, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alone has the mandate and ability to initiate that change—and in doing so, he could leave an enduring legacy in India’s history.
